Two quiet and isolated teenagers, Owen (Justice Smith) and Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine), bond over their shared love of a cancelled TV show called The Pink Opaque, a late-night teen fantasy in the vein of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But what started as fandom becomes something deeper as they lose themselves in the show’s complicated fiction. And then Owen’s mom dies. And then Maddy disappears. And then the show is cancelled. Years later, as pieces of the show begin to leak back into Owen’s world, he must make a choice: which life is the real one?
Writer/director Jane Schoenbrun created I Saw the TV Glow as a follow up to their 2021 project We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, another claustrophobic little palimpsest of a movie that uses our patterns of media consumption as a space to interrogate attitudes about identity. Sometimes, when the world outside doesn’t feel like home, we find homes in other worlds. And if we can no longer shape a world to fit us, we can shape ourselves to fit our selves. But it’s going to be scary. Like a Star Trek transporter, all you can do is step in and be dissolved, trusting that you’ll be reconstituted correctly at your desired destination.
