Over four decades after exploding onto the spoken word scene, two once radical and now increasingly frazzled punk poets, Donny and Mervin, struggle against the prospect of slowly disintegrating in genteel oblivion; adrift in the picturesque East Anglian coastal village of Wivenhoe. "Poets Day" inhabits a strangely familiar landscape; brimming with fading artists, assorted eccentrics and bus-pass bohemians.
I Hear Voices Theatre Company presents two brand new half hour adventures in this popular absurd radio series; which has so far exceeded all expectations and not become the subject of legal proceedings... Recorded before your very ears at the Company's spiritual home of Colchester Arts Centre.
“Wivenwho May Fair”, written by Damien Bell
Come one, come all to the May Fair, a veritable "Who's that?" of local bands and spoken word artistes. Mervin is bravely running the show and envisages a wonderful, welcoming, weekend Wivenhoe Woodstock, with Donny lending an unwilling hand. But with the sun already well over the yard arm, a field full of drunken city teenagers, students, hippies, bikers, outraged local poets, a lot of very dodgy music, and with the gods yet to be appeased, can calamity be far away?
"State of the Nation", written by Darren Gooding
Donny accidentally wins a 100 year old American cornflake packet competition - the prize; office of President of the United States, but Donny’s sudden elevation doesn’t please the incumbent… The Whitehouse is only big enough for one “Donald” and Mister Fletcher-Park is going to make sure it’s him… Meanwhile newly appointed Chief of Staff, Mervin Mule, is experiencing an existential crisis; could this fresh madness actually be a good thing for Western Civilization..?
WARNING: ANY SIMILARITY BETWEEN POETS, ESSEX OR PUNK, IS ENTIRELY COINCIDENTAL
I Hear Voices Theatre Company is a small-scale performance team, founded in 2012 by Damien Bell and Darren Gooding. Its primary focus has been producing live recordings of original audio comedy podcast serials; including the 1950’s spy thriller, ‘The Adventures of Bentley Strangetrousers’, Victorian Steampunk epic,‘Tea With Lady Breakneck’ and Science Fiction spoof “OFU”. During Lockdown the company started remotely producing a new series of absurd Science Fiction epics; "Space Wizards on the Brink" and since 2021 they have been annually plundering the works of M.R. James and Edgar Allan Poe to produce their own (very silly) "Ghost Story for Christmas".
