Each performance will approach Jeanyoon's graduation work '≠' from three different perspectives: From a post-structural and Rhizomatic perspective (Workshop 1), from a socio-political perspective (Workshop 2), and from the Medium perspective (InInInInInstagram).
Workshop 1.Hypertext Jump! Workshop co-constructing Rhizomatic Narrative
Jeanyoon Choi, Jun 2023
Jump hypertextually, from word to word - co-construct the structure of the rhizomatic artwork ‘ ≠’.
The artwork titled '≠' (Not Equal) challenges the concept of '=' (Equal). In this context, '=' represents the act of equating the intangible with numbers, the illiterate with the literate, simplifying complex matters, and the tendency to believe in the existence of a simple truth or framework to comprehend the complexities of the world. This framework often takes the form of equality, observed in statistical equations, financial equations, machine learning equations, and social science equations. In academia, theories that employ equations to explain the world are often celebrated, while in industry, the notion that "data is truth" prevails, seeking to convert intangible concepts into tangible numbers. However, we have also witnessed the negative consequences of this emphasis on equality, such as unpredictability, black swan events, and the reduction of our lives to numerical representations, turning us into mere statistics. Equality embodies the modern notion of linearity and centralisation, heavily influencing our daily lives.
Therefore, '≠' symbolises the deconstruction of this centralised system. The web artwork, '≠', with its four-channel structure, allows people to experience a hyper-textual leap from one keyword to another, embracing a rhizomatic structure that may appear chaotic, but chaos is inherent to the nature of the world. For instance, this rhizomatic hypertextual jump can be as simple as moving from 'Liberty' to 'Freedom', as complex as transitioning from 'Quantum Physics' to 'Postmodernity', as personal as navigating from 'Break up' to 'Post-breakup clubbing', or as metonymical as from 'Liberty' to 'Liberty Department Store'. This workshop aims to collaboratively construct and add keywords to this rhizomatic word relationship map. Participants have the freedom to contribute both academically and personally meaningful keywords, whether they make logical sense or not, organised or disorganised. However, it is discouraged to simply add words for the sake of it. Instead, the process should resemble a brainstorming session conducted in a state of flow. To facilitate this, the workshop will commence with a reflective question. The goal is to foster hypertextual thinking, akin to traversing from one keyword to another, or from one online site to another. Boom Ba-da boom, what makes sense on a small scale (single transition), should end up in a non-interpretable hyperobject structure on a larger scale (sum of transitions) - and don’t be afraid of making this hyperobject, because this is the very nature of the world. Σ(part) ≠ (whole).
Workshop 2.
Building Third Runways: Challenging the notion of ‘=’ around the world
Jeanyoon Choi, Jun 2023
Co-Creating an Imaginary Land Installation - building third runways, which will cross two existing parallel runways (‘=’), creating Not Equal Sign (‘≠’) - around the world’s airports.
Runways around the world are typically designed to run parallel for efficiency, minimising flight path collisions and maximising runway capacity. The parallel arrangement of runways represents a symbol of modern efficiency, resembling an equals sign ('=') when looked at from an aerial perspective. The concept of equality, denoted by '=', is widely associated with our modern world, symbolising logic, reasoning, prediction, planning, and stability.
However, it is worth questioning the appropriateness of this tendency. Tempelhof airport in Berlin, originally constructed by the Nazis for propaganda purposes, exemplifies this concern. The airport reflected the Nazis' ideology of planning and logic, which seemingly justified illogical aspects such as nationalism and Aryan racial superiority. It is paradoxical to learn that it was later used during the Berlin Blockade and Airlift, a significant low point in German history.
What if we were to construct a third runway at Tempelhof airport, running diagonally above two existing parallel runways (‘=’), thus forming a not equal ('≠') sign? This hypothetical scenario raises questions about the association of equality with nationalism and racism. A similar example can be found in South Africa's Apartheid regime, which employed stability and logic to justify the fundamentally illogical system of "Races are equal but separated." Envisioning a non-parallel third runway at Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo Airport would highlight the dangers and fatal consequences of clinging to the notion of equality ('=').
The Hong Kong protests provide another perspective on equality. Communist ideology, rooted in the concept of equality ('='), raises questions about whether the actions of the Chinese Communist Party and its treatment of Hong Kong genuinely reflect this principle. Hong Kong's unique historical and cultural context, including the "One Country, Two Systems" concept, is frequently misunderstood as equating (‘=’) Hong Kong with China when in reality, they are fundamentally different. Within this context, what will be the significant meaning of the act of building a diagonal runway ('≠') at Hong Kong Airport?
The ideological equality and political correctness often associated with liberal elites in New York is yet another area of concern. These elites frequently emphasise equality in their speeches, but in practice, they prioritise safeguarding their elitist college degrees, jobs, and careers, perpetuating an exclusive inner network. In this sense, what will the Not Equal sign ('≠') in JFK imply?
Which city do you come from, live in, or are familiar with? What instances of blind equality ('=') do you encounter within your city? How can the concept of building an imaginary runway within an airport provoke conversations that challenge the notion of equality ('=') as artificial and potentially harmful, urging us to embrace and understand the nonequal ('≠') nature of the world?

Instagram Live-in-Instagram Live-in-Instagram Live-in-Instagram Live-in-Instagram Live
Instagram has established itself as one of the most widely used platforms in today's digital landscape, effectively dominating the entire web ecosystem. Its influence can be likened to that of a prime physical location in Central London, but in the virtual realm, Instagram serves as a valuable online space. Operating as an online commercial platform, Instagram's model can be compared to that of a real estate business. Among its various functionalities, Instagram Live holds the position of being the "prime location," occupying a fixed spot at the very left among stories. This feature is extensively utilized by commercial platforms, particularly fashion brands, to livestream their events and engage with their audience.
Despite its commercial potential, many of our users are hesitant to use the live feature due to its contradiction with the current metaphysics and mechanisms of Instagram usage. The essence of a live stream is to captivate viewers every second, ensuring that even those who rapidly skim through stories stay engaged and watch continuously. Time is directly correlated with attention, and attention is highly valuable.
So, how do we tackle this challenge? We propose taking a radically different approach to the conventional live stream concept. Rather than aiming for a live experience that is fun, interesting, and commercial, filled with storytelling and narrative, we aim for a deliberately dull approach. We invite participants to simply live stream their phone screens, repeatedly capturing the live stream itself. The resulting video becomes abstract, lacking commercial appeal and interest. There is no narrative, only an infinite, repetitive cycle. The content of the Instagram live stream is what was being streamed 10 seconds ago, showcasing what was streamed 20 seconds ago, 30 seconds ago, 40 seconds ago, and so on. There is no real context, storytelling, or narrative present, intentionally designed to lose the interest of anyone attempting to watch it.
Thus, participating in this unconventional approach requires a certain level of courage to go against the metaphysics and mechanisms that underlie the Instagram live experience. It challenges the notion that a live stream should showcase the best and most interesting aspects of one's or a brand's life. By creating an infinite cycle of live-being-live-being-lived, we subvert the conventional metaphysics and mechanisms of Instagram live streams - Who are ready to sacrifice their chance to get attention and followers in the trade of being part of the art performance?
