Erika Howsare's first nonfiction book, The Age of Deer, is newly out from Catapult Books. Previously she published two books of poetry and has placed essays, interviews and reviews at the Atlantic, Orion, The Los Angeles Review of Books, LongReads, the Boston Review, and other outlets. Originally from Pennsylvania, she lives in rural Virginia, where she has worked in local journalism for more than twenty years. She is also a writing teacher and mentor and the host of the podcast If You See a Deer, a companion to her book.
Marissa Percoco is the Executive Director of the Firefly Gathering. Having grown up in the concrete labyrinth of the San Francisco bay Area, Marissa escaped to the wilds in college and has never looked back. She is a naturalist by heart, and is deeply rooted in the Earthskills movement, anti-oppression work, her garden, and the old Appalachian soil. Learning plants, animals, stories, songs and local ways of weaving into harmony with the environment is her passion.
The Firefly Gathering is a grassroots, community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Western North Carolina, providing educational and cultural programming to the Asheville area since 2007. By offering a cyclical sharing of traditional craft and wisdom in community, we reconnect people in the Southeast with the teachings of the past to engage with the rapidly changing present to co-create a sustainable future.
