Synopsis:
This session is interactive and is designed to increase our awareness of the different factors that generate all kinds of biases in the workplace and how they hurt the workplace. We will also discuss personal and organizational strategies for reducing workplace bias. For companies to succeed in the global marketplace, leaders must fully leverage the skills and attributes of a diverse team. In the quest to attract and retain the right skills, best minds, and the strongest talent, companies must create an environment that embraces diversity and inclusion.
Bio:
Shelly Hogans resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She received a B.S. in Accounting from the Pennsylvania State University with honors with highest distinction, an MBA from Drexel University with a concentration in finance and executive development from Carnegie Mellon University via The Advanced Leadership Institute (TALI), a leadership program that champions representation of Black executives and professionals in corporate and community leadership roles.
She is passionate about diversity, equity and inclusion and developed significant cultural and structural transformation initiatives focused on recognizing and respecting the identity of all employees; founded the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Forum, functioning as C-suite liaison and founding Advisory Council member for Women in Construction & Service (WICS) at a former employer. She also served as a member of IMA’s former Global Diversity and Inclusion Committee and pioneered student mentor initiatives via collaborative efforts between the Financial Executives International Pittsburgh Chapter and the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc.
She has three young adult sons and enjoys reality TV food shows, cooking and baking. Her slogan is “death by cheesecake!”

• Define bias and identify how cognitive reasoning and stereotypes impact biases.
• Describe unconscious bias.
• Explain the value of diversity and inclusion.
• Recognize bias and its effects in the workplace.
• Discuss strategies for overcoming biases.
