Hutted Histories: Women Transported to War in WW1 with Debbie Land

Join us for a fascinating talk by Debbie Land, beginning with a snapshot of the pioneering women who helped shape the early world of motoring. We'll explore key national and international figures who made their mark in driving, racing, engineering, and manufacturing, from the advent of the motor car up to the outbreak of the First World War.
As the war took hold, we’ll examine how women’s roles evolved, leading to a dramatic rise in the number of women learning to drive and acquiring new skills in transport - both at home and abroad.
Throughout the talk, we’ll consider the wider social and historical impact of these women’s contributions and reflect on how their legacy continues to influence our world today.
About Debbie Land:
Debbie has been an active volunteer at the Shuttleworth Collection for over 11 years. As one of 3 keynote speakers for ‘The Collection’, Debbie regularly delivers presentations on the history of the Shuttleworth family and the legacy left behind by Richard Shuttleworth. In addition, Debbie is a huge big advocate for untold pioneering women’s stories associated with motoring and aviation.
Initially spending 10 years in the WRAF (flying a desk), followed by a successful career as a Payroll IT Consultant, she is now retired, but seems to work just as hard in her voluntary role, where her involvement also extends to looking after the Collection’s Costume and Carriages and holds the role of Volunteer Co-Ordinator for circa 400 volunteers.
