Beyond the Beats har inviteret Morten McCoy og Josefine Opsahl til at fortolke og fejre den etiopiske klaverspiller og nonne Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrous musik.
Beyond the Beats sætter denne aften fokus på den etiopiske pianist og nonne, Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou. Den 98-årige nonne skaber unikke kompositioner der forener klassisk, blues og jazz med skalaer som ofte anvendes i hendes hjemland Etiopien. Kompositionerne rummer en eftertænksomhed, følelsesmæssigt nærvær og spiritualitet, som mange lyttere har følt sig draget imod siden hun for alvor fik opmærksomhed i 2006 via compilation-serien Éthiopiques.
Morten McCoy og Josefine Opsahl er denne aften blevet sat i stævne for hver især frit at fortolke hendes stemningsfulde kompositioner og hylde hendes musik.

Morten McCoy (f. 1992) arbejder til daglig som instrumentalist, sangskriver og musikproducent. Han er bl.a. aktuel i grupper som Bremer/McCoy og Guiding Star Orchestra, og har samarbejdet med Peter Sommer og Marie Key.
I forbindelse med koncerten, sætter han følgende ord på sit forhold til Emahoys musik:
"Emahoys musik har ledsaget mig mangt en morgen. Den opleves umiddelbar, ærlig og åndelig. I hendes kompositioner sker et unikt møde mellem det religiøse og det sekulære, mellem øst og vest, mellem logik og mystik. Det er alt sammen noget, som interesserer mig på et dybere plan end blot det musikalske. Jeg er på ingen måde i stand til at fremføre hendes værker én til én. Derfor vil jeg blot prøve at kanalisere den energi, som jeg oplever i hendes univers ind i en improvisation. Jeg vil tage udgangspunkt i Emahoys værk og låne fra dette og hint. Det er ikke noget, som jeg har prøvet før, så det bliver spændende, hvor vi ender."

Josefine Opsahl er en bemærkelsesværdig komponist og kunstner, der forener sin klassiske musikalske baggrund med en nybrydende åbenhed til lyd, genrer, udtryksformer, rum, kunst og til sit hovedinstrument celloen. Josefines udtryk og værker reflekterer hendes egen kunstneriske afsøgning af kunstens rolle i vores samfund og udforsker spændingsfeltet mellem tradition og innovation, virtuositet og intuition, partituret og improvisationen.
Josefines unikke lyd, kreativitet, solistiske egenskaber og karismatiske performative evner, har placeret hende og hendes mangeartede, fremadstormende projekter og ensembler som ledende progressive kræfter på den internationale musikscene. Hun har modtaget en række priser for sin kunst og sit virke, senest Wilhelm Hansen Fondens Hæderslegat 2020, Léonie Sonnings Talentpris 2021 og Odd Fellow Ordenens Musikpris 2021.
I en naturlig dialog med sin samtid og frigjort af genrebegrænsninger udtrykker Josefine sig ligestillet gennem komposition, improvisation og performance samt kuraterer og forlænger sine musikalske udtryksverdener i samarbejder med andre kunstnere, festivaler, rum og vidensområder på tværs af genrer og udtryk. Dette har resulteret i værker og performances til museer, gallerier og festivaler så som Festival Música Estranha (BR), DEIÀ International Music Festival (ESP), Intonal Festival (SE), Roskilde Festival, Statens Museum for Kunst, Thorvaldsens Museum og Golden Days Festival (DK).

Beyond the Beats has invited Morten McCoy and Josefine Opsahl to interpret and celebrate the music of the Ethiopian piano player and nun Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou.
Beyond the Beats will this evening focus on the Ethiopian piano player and nun, Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou. The 98 year old nun creates unique compositions that unites classical, blues and jazz with scales known from her home country Ethiopia.
The compositions entails a thoughtfulness and spirituality that many listeners have felt drawn to since she got attention with the Éthiopiques compilation in 2006.
This evening Morten McCoy and Josefine Opsahl will interpret her music and play a solo set to honor her music.

He works as a instrumentalist, songwriter and music producer. He is known for his works in groups like Bremer/McCoy and Guiding Star Orchestra and has collaborated with Peter Sommer og Marie Key.
In connection to the concert he describes his relationship to Emahoy's music in the following way:
"I have listened a lot to the music of Emahoy. I experience it as direct, honest and spiritual. In her compositions there is a unique meeting between the religious and secular, between east and west, between logik and mystery. It's all themes that interests me on a more profound level than just the musical aspect. I'm not able to perform her music on a 1:1 scale, but will try to improvise based on the energy that I experience in her universe. I've never tried something like that before so it will be exciting to see where we will end".

Josefine Opsahl (b. 1992) is a remarkable artist and composer who connects music, art, performance and spaces in her works. She extends her classical musical training, knowledge of its history, perception of art and self into different new medias of expression. At the core of her work lies a strong will for using her art to examining and rising ethical and social questions as also shows in her effort to share her thoughts and music across cultural and societal structures.
With a liberating openness to sounds, genre, the use of electronics and her main instrument the cello Josefine’s works unfold in the intersection between tradition and renewal, expertise and intuition, the score and the improvised in a search for where musical expression, art, society and we ourselves are headed as beings and creators.
Her musical skills, creative approach and performative qualities have positioned her, her projects and ensembles as some of the leading forces on the international scene. She has received a number of prizes for her work – latest the Wilhelm Hansen Foundation‘s Scholarship of honour 2020, Leonie Sonning Music Prize’s Talent Prize 2021 and Odd Fellow Ordenens Musikpris 2021.
Being a conscious, contemporary musician she writes, curates, improvises and performs equally and extends her musical worlds through collaborations with other artists, curators, festivals and spaces beyond the grid of genres and expressions.
This has resulted in commissions for museums, galleries and festivals such as Festival Música Estranha (BR), DEIÀ International Music Festival (ES), The National Gallery of Denmark, Thorvaldens Museum and the UTZON Centre (DK).
As a composer she created major works for special occasions like ‘Drei Bewegungen des Elektrischen Körpers’ (2021) for The Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir, The Royal Danish Ballet in choreography by Artistic Director Nikolaj Hübbe and The Royal Guard’s Orchestra that was commissioned and premiered in honor of Her Majesty The Queen of Denmark at her state visit in Berlin November 2021
– ‘DrømmeDøden’ (2021) chamber opera for Nordic Opera premiering at Den Ny Opera, Skuespilhuset at The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen and Folkoperan in Stockholm May-June 2022
– ’I Walk I Bleed’ (2020-2021) concert and performance for 10 celli at Click Festival 2020, repremiere at Sort/Hvid 2021
– ’Noli Turbare Circulos Meos’ (2019) for the Esbjerg Ensemble (DK)
– ’EKKLESIATERION’ (2021) for solo cello and quadrophonic speaker setup for Intonal Festival in Malmö (SE).
Her works has been performed throughout Europa, in China, Brazil and Argentina and her album releases have received rave reviews and awards, recently the Round Glass Music Award (US) and the Danish Radio P2’s Listeners’ Prize.
Josefine Opsahl has given lectures in Shanghai, at The Royal Danish Academy of Music, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and The University of Copenhagen. She studied classical and contemporary cello playing at the Royal Danish Academy of Music (DK) and Northwestern University (IL, USA) and holds an Advanced Postgraduate Soloist degree within Contemporary Creative Art from University of Southern Denmark.
