Come and learn about the often misunderstood, but very important saltmarsh and wetland habitats.Saltmarsh habitats are a vital nursery ground for many recreational fish species like flathead, bream, prawns, and even snapper and kingfish.
Connectivity between oceans, rivers, saltmarsh and wetland habitats ensures healthy fish populations by improving water quality and strengthening coastal ecosystems, which directly benefit anglers by supporting sustainable fisheries. Tagged Eastern School Prawns from the region have been found as far north as Brisbane, highlighting the significant importance of habitat connectivity.
OzFish are assisting the Hunter Wetlands Centre by collecting vital data with help from anglers and the community, before restoring tidal flow from Ironbark Creek to 3.5ha of former salt marsh habitat.
On the first Saturday of every month, OzFish will carry out Fisher Science Monitoring with this first event being run as an “intro day” to learn about the project, the history of the site, and how you can become involved!
There will be time for a fish at the end, so bring your rod along. We’ll supply the bait and a few extra rods for those who don’t have their own.
