HUNGRY BEAT: SCOTTISH INDEPENDENT POP UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT 1977 – 1984 / CREEPING BENT - 30 ODD YEARS with DOUGLAS MACINTYRE
About this Event

Following our excellent event with DOUGLAS MACINTYRE last year, we're dellighted to welcome him back in conversation to celebrate the publication of the paperback of HUNGRY BEAT & CREEPING BENT via White Rabbit Books.

HUNGRY BEAT & THE CREEPING BENT ORGANISATION

Hungry Beat - The Scottish Independent Pop Underground Movement (1977-1984) is a book that highlights the story of Edinburgh’s Fast Product and pop:aural labels along with Glasgow’s Postcard Records. Based on interviews from Grant McPhee’s Big Gold Dream film about both labels, Hungry Beat was written by Douglas MacIntyre and after a successful hardback edition is now published as a paperback by White Rabbit. The spark point for many of the the artists and labels associated with this post-punk scene in Scotland was seeing Subway Sect and The Slits perform on The Clash’s White Riot tour in Edinburgh on 7th May 1977. In a matter of months after this epochal event Fast Product had released their first single (Never Been in a Riot) by The Mekons.

THE CREEPING BENT ORGANISATION - 30 ODD YEARS

Douglas MacIntyre established The Creeping Bent Organisation as an independent communications company in 1994 and has been running Creeping Bent for nearly 30 years. He is currently writing a book detailing the trials and tribulations of maintaining an independent stance throughout three decades. Creeping Bent has released recordings by a long list of underground mavericks including many active participants from the period covered in the Hungry Beat book. Artists associated with Creeping Bent include members of Subway Sect (Vic Godard), The Pop Group (Gareth Sager), Suicide (Alan Vega), Fire Engines (Davy Henderson), along with groups including Adventures in Stereo, Sexual Objects, The Secret Goldfish, Future Pilot AKA, The Leopards, The Nectarine No9 (among many others). 2022 saw Creeping Bent have their first number 1 album when MacIntyre’s own music project, Port Sulphur, hit those heady heights in the independent album chart with the vinyl release of their Speed of Light album.

We have two ticket options available: * Event Only and *Event with Discounted Book Combo deal - books will be available for collection at the Festival.

Our event will be followed by a dedicated signing event with Douglas. RRP books will also be available for purchase on the day.
