Join us for this small group 3-Part Workshop to capture the speed and beauty of Hummingbirds.
About this Event

This workshop will discuss the important information and techniques of Hummingbird photography. The highlight of this workshop will be the hands-on session photographing Hummingbirds at Chatfield Farms Botanic Gardens, In the critique session you will receive feedback and also see the photos from others which is a great learning experience.

Part 1: Virtual Online Lecture:

This will be a 2-hour lecture to help you set up your camera and plan to capture these fast-moving birds, the best lighting, and that perfect background during the practical session of this workshop.

  • Techniques to produce sharp photos
  • Back button focus
  • Tracking options
  • Best camera setting to photograph these fast-moving birds
  • The best places to photograph Hummingbirds
  • The direction of light to enhance your photographs
  • Composition and background
  • The equipment needed for photographing Hummingbirds

Part 2: Shooting Workshop:

Led by Mike’s Camera’s Scott Dougherty. You will have the opportunity to photograph Hummingbirds at Chatfield Farms Botanic Gardens. Scott will always be nearby to assist you with technical questions and provide hands-on instruction to ensure you execute best practices and capture the best shots possible

Part 3: Virtual Gallery and Critique:

We will wrap up the workshop with a fun and rewarding critique. We’ll review your images from the shoot and share techniques that really worked, and those that were not as useful. You’ll be astonished by the immense variety of images that will have been captured and spend some time receiving positive and informative feedback.

Tuition $179, Plus Eventbrite processing fee

(You are welcome to pay in store to avoid the Eventbrite fee.)

The Online portions of this workshop will be recorded and available to you for a minimum of 7 days to review again.

Due to the hands on nature of this workshop it is limited to 12 people.

Hands-on Workshop: Sunday August 24, 2025, 9:00AM – 11:30AM (MST)‍Chatfield Farms Botanic Gardens (entry to the gardens is included in your tuition)

Online Critique and Gallery showing: Wednesday Augsut 27, 2025, 6:30PM – 8:30PM (MST)

  • Free 12 x 18 inch Matte or Glossy print of your favorite image from the workshop

What to Bring

DSLR or Mirrorless Camera with an extra memory and extra battery

Telephoto lens– this will be discussed in the evening lecture. A minimum focal length of 300mm is recommended for the best results. Mike’s Camera has rental equipment if you don’t have the correct lens

About Your Instructor

Scott is the store manager of Mike’s Camera at Park Meadows. With over 30 years of experience in the photographic industry. He enjoys wildlife, macro and sports photography and especially likes photographing our home town Denver Broncos. He also has a key role in several of Mike’s Camera workshops. As a native Coloradoan, he lives in Littleton and loves to spend time outdoors Biking, Golfing or capturing photos of his five granddaughters.
