About this Event
Humility : Drift is a site-specific dance performance and beach naturalist event at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park.
Performers will lead audience members on a short walk through the park, followed by a performance. After the performance, audience members are invited to take a copy of our "embodied ecology cards," illustrated by local artist Madison Mayfield, and explore beach ecology through movement. Performers will remain on site to answer questions about the cards.
Details: This event starts at 11am sharp, as we are working with the tide. Please give yourself ample time to park and arrive at the beach.
We will meet at the "Welcoming Figure" statue on the beach. Drive downhill toward the beach and park in the bottom parking lot. Follow the footpath over the train tracks. You will see us wearing orange beanies! .
About the project:
Nicole Loeffler-Gladstone began this collaborative project in 2021, in an attempt to learn movement directly from the landscape. The project has since grown to propose that dance improvisation provides tools anyone can use to attune themselves within an ecosystem. As a result of this attunement practice, or "embodied ecology," we hope participants become more emotionally and physically invested in the wellbeing of life around them.
As poet Mary Oliver reminds us, "Attention is the beginning of devotion." Humility : Drift asks performers to use dance improvisation to devote themselves so deeply to a place that they become part of it. This project offers a toolkit to practice entanglement in a multispecies future.
This project is supported, in part, by a grant from 4Culture. Photos by Allina Yang and Ruby Townsend.
