Course Description

Dental providers are mandated reporters for suspected human trafficking. This course will provide information to assist in recognizing the warning signs of human trafficking, resources for reporting, and the status of trafficking in Michigan and nationally. The course will also highlight ethical and legal principles guiding oral health care delivery and the recent changes in the Michigan Administrative Rules for Dentistry Delegation requirements for all dental team members.

Objectives

· Understand the types and venues of human trafficking in the state of Michigan.

· Identify victims of human trafficking in health care settings.

· Recognize the warning signs of human trafficking in healthcare settings for adults and minors.

· Understand resources for reporting the suspected victims of human trafficking.

· Identify the ethical principles that apply to delivering oral health care services.

· Describe legal obligations applicable to oral health care, including contracts, negligence, informed consent, refusal, and patient abandonment.

· Describe current legal duties that can be delegated to allied dental health personnel.

· Review key Administrative Rule mandates for licensed dental professionals in Michigan.


Speaker Biographical Sketch

Professor Pamela Zarkowski is Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Detroit Mercy. She earned a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Public Health in Dental Public Health, a Teaching Certificate in Community Dentistry from the University of Michigan, and a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University. An educator for more than 40 years, she has served in several administrative roles and continues to teach predoctoral, graduate, and dental hygiene students. She has held various leadership roles in national organizations, provided professional development workshops and seminars, and published articles and book chapters on dental public health, professional, legal, and ethical issues for dental and health professionals. She is a past president of the American Dental Education Association, Society for Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine, the American Society for Dental Ethics, and former Chairperson of the ADEAGies Foundation. Zarkowski is a Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society member, an honorary member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, and an honorary fellow of the American College of Legal Medicine. In 2011, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Dental Education Association. She was honored in 2017 by the ADEAGies Foundation as the recipient of the Gies Award for Achievement – Dental Educator. In 2019, she was named one of Crain’s Notable Women in Education Leadership.
