About this Event

Soil — what does this mean to you?

Many see soil simply as the earthly element that holds our foliage together and allows plants to grow.

But research tells a deeper story. Consider these possibilities:

a) Urban agriculture grown on well-managed soil produces up to 10% of global vegetables, legumes, and tubers, supporting food security, livelihoods, and nutrition.

b) Children exposed to biodiverse soils in urban parks enjoy stronger immune development.

c) Organic materials — which make up 70% of global waste generated by cities — can return nutrients to the soil and expand green spaces when safely processed into compost, biochar, or other forms of biowaste.

Yet the reality is stark. Cities are rapidly replacing agricultural land, weakening food systems and accelerating climate change.

Singapore’s urban soils are no exception.
Our soils are unique tropical residual soils formed from granite and sedimentary rocks. However, their fertility is often poor. They are heavily modified by construction, compacted into dense layers, and contain significant carbon storage in areas such as roadsides.

So the question is: How can we improve the quality of our urban soils so that future generations can enjoy healthier, more sustainable cities?
