Join us for the unveiling of a collection of animated film shorts celebrating Lāhainā history, culture and sense of place. Free to the public, the event will be emceed by Sissy Lake-Farm and include the premiere of 10 mo‘olelo shared by Lāhainā kūpuna that have been animated by artists Richard O'Connor, Sasha Hercik, Jenna Lee, Syril Pecson, Zach Quemado, and Abby Worthley. The storytellers will be in attendance to share their reflections, and a few additional surprises are being developed for audience members. Visit the individual project pages below to listen to the story recordings, view community consultations, and learn more about each artist and their processes. The result of our summer 2024 call to artists, these animations stem from the Hui Mo'olelo: Lāhainā program partnership with Lahaina Restoration Foundation. Led by Kalapana Kollars & Anuhea Yagi, a cohort of storytellers were trained and paired with intergenerational partners to audio-record memories rooted in Lāhainā. Selected by a community panel, these artists submitted exemplary proposals to transform recordings into animated works, and spent months working with our team and each storyteller to develop their designs.
