Experience an unforgettable evening celebrating Hawai‘i’s youth arts. The 2025 ʻOhina Short Film Showcase pairs a live performance by Hawai‘i Youth Symphony (HYS) with the premiere of The Arrangements short film.
On Wednesday, November 12, join Hawaiʻi Public Radio for a one-night screening, performance by HYS, and post-film Q&A conversation moderated by HPR’s Cassie Ordonio. It's an opportunity to see exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of HYS's involvement with the film's score, which was recorded in HPR’s Atherton Studio. Enjoy a Q+A session with the filmmakers, and screening of the film itself.
The Arrangements, written and directed by Sonny Ganaden and produced by Gerard Elmore, is a short film set in a tough Kalihi neighborhood. The 15-minute film tells the story of 12-year-old Micronesian boys living at Kamehameha IV housing apartments who cope with loss through adventure and resilience. Michael-Thomas Foumai of the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra composed a film score to capture the emotions in the storyline. Eight students from Hawai‘i Youth Symphony's YSI bring the film score to life through poignant, mature and breathtaking playing, marking the first time that HYS was involved in a film scoring project. The opportunity to participate elevates youth voices on and off screen, giving them a platform to dream courageously, grow together, and lead their community through their passion for the arts.
