HPR’s Atherton Concert Series is back with a new lineup of local musicians celebrating jazz! Join us for the Hawaiʻi Jazz Performance Series at our Honolulu studio featuring: Hot Club of Hulaville with Kelsea Armstrong, Tommy James Trio, Arara de Vento, and Eha Batutas.

Don’t miss your chance to hear their intimate performances and exclusive setlists in person at our Honolulu studio at 738 Kāheka Street. These performances will be recorded for future broadcasts and online content.

Tommy James Trio

Former music director of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, pianist Tommy James, "retired" to Honolulu and now is one of the city’s busiest musicians. Joined by Dean Taba on bass and Darryl Pellegrini on drums, the trio will perform selections ranging from classic to contemporary jazz standards and original compositions.

Saturday evening, June 22 @ 7 p.m. - Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

About the artists:

Tommy James, Piano
Originally from Mt. Vernon, N.Y., pianist Tommy James is the former music director of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Active on the NYC jazz-pop-r'n'b scene from 1970 through 2010, one of his earliest gigs was house pianist in Harlem's famed Apollo Theater. He has toured or recorded with Lionel Hampton, Stanley Turrentine, Fredddie Hubbard, Herbie Mann, Roy Ayers and Donald Byrd, among others. There was also work in the Manhattan “high society” cabaret venues such as the Oak Room and Feinstein's with Nell Carter, Eileen Fulton and the legendary Eartha Kitt. In 2011, he “retired” to Honolulu and now plays with some of Hawaii's finest musicians. You can catch him solo piano Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the Lewers Lounge at the Halekulani.

Dean Taba, Bass
Dean Taba is a freelance bassist, composer, producer, and educator living in Honolulu, HI. After studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Dean moved in 1984 to Los Angeles to further refine his skills on both the Acoustic and Electric bass. For 20 years, Dean worked in the studios of LA with his musical heroes, mentors, and contemporaries recording countless albums, TV shows, jingles, movies, and video game soundtracks .He is now back home performing, teaching, recording, and producing some of Hawaii’s most influential and innovative artists. He is also very excited to be directing the University of Hawaii - Manoa Jazz Ensemble, Hawaii Youth Symphony Jazz program and Pacific Music Institute Jazz Summer Intensive.

Darryl Pellegrini, Drums
Born and raised in Youngstown Ohio, Darryl Pellegrini earned hisdegree in Music Education with a jazz emphasis from Youngstown State University and his Masters Degree in Music Performance from Manhattan School of Music.Throughout his career in New York City, Darryl toured and performedwith numerous jazz greats such as the Woody Herman Orchestra, theVillage Vanguard Orchestra, Lew Tabackin and Toshiko Akiyoshi. In Hawaii, Darryl has toured andrecorded with Amy Hanaiali’i i, Hawaii Symphony and numerous other local Hawaiian, jazz and commercial greats. After 20 years of freelance performing, Darryl now happily teaches, performs and resides in Hawaii with hisfamily.

The Hawaiʻi Jazz Performance Series takes place on Saturdays June and early July. The evening concerts begin at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Doors open thirty minutes before the show starts.

This event will be filmed, recorded and photographed. Your presence constitutes your release of all rights to your recorded voice and image, which may be used in projects by Hawaiʻi Public Radio.

Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis — advance ticket purchase is strongly suggested. General admission tickets are $45, with 100% of the proceeds from each event directly supporting the featured artists.

Ticket Policy: Ticket sales are final. Sorry, no refunds.

Parking: Street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood (metered parking is free after 6 pm).
