A celebration of strength and legacy returns to Emporia with the 2nd Annual Howe Hoist—a one-of-a-kind stone-lifting competition inspired by legendary local stonemason Richard Howe.
Richard Howe, a Welsh immigrant and master craftsman, left a permanent mark on the Emporia landscape. His meticulous stonework helped build iconic structures like the original Lyon County Courthouse, the first building at Kansas State Normal School (now ESU), the Chase County Courthouse, and stone houses at the Kaw Mission in Council Grove. His hands shaped the very foundation of our region, one stone at a time.
In honor of Howe’s enduring legacy, Good Muscle and the Lyon County History Center have partnered once again to host this personal test of grit, precision, and pride.
Join us at the Howe House (315 E Logan St) on Saturday, September 6th, 2025, at 5 PM, where competitors will attempt to lift the Howe Stones, weighing in at 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 pounds. Participants will have two chances to hoist each stone from the ground and place it on a stone pedestal. Successful lifters will have their names etched into the annals of history via the Howe Hoist Registry.
New this year:
A youth challenge for lifters 12 and under (~30 lbs), encouraging the next generation to test their strength and honor Emporia’s heritage. All minors under 18 must have a parent or guardian’s permission to participate.
