About this Event
In Howard's first talk Oliver Cromwell and the Battle of Worcester, he will describe Cromwell's early life and his rise to fame as a military commander par excellence, and in the process dispel some of the myths that have arisen about him. The Battle of Worcester was a demonstration of Cromwell's amazing ability as a battle strategist and popular commander of the Parliamentarian soldiers who fought for him, much to the demise of Prince Charles, later Charles II, who, leading a largely Scottish army, was soundly beaten on 3rd September 1651 and forced to flee for his life.
Wine will be on sale, both by the glass for the evening and in bottles to be taken home.
Howard (Robinson), apart from obtaining a degree in Biological Sciences from London University in 1970, has always been interested in History, and the so-called English Civil War in particular. Since he is directly descended from one of its leading protagonists, Oliver Cromwell, retiring to live near Worcester after nearly 40 years as a Head of Biology in two schools, he was very excited to be so close to the scene of the final decisive battle of our Civil War so he could study it in more detail.
