Howard Deutch’s PRETTY IN PINK
(PG-13, 1986, 96 min)
Ranked #11 by Rolling Stones as one of the top 25 soundtracks of all time, “Pretty in Pink” is a teen classic full of great post punk new wave artists like New Order, Suzanne Vega, INXS, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Smiths. This John Huges-penned picture introduced America at large to these mostly foreign bands, and new sounds. Even to those living in small towns. Andie Walsh (Molly Ringwald) is a teenager who lives with her underemployed dad (Harry Dean Stanton). She is considered a misfit at her uppity high school, but somehow, she rises above them all. Her oddball best friend, Duckie (Jon Cryer), is hopelessly in love with her. When local rich kid Blaine (Andrew McCarthy) develops a fascination with her, their romance versus high school social politics culminates at the big night of the prom.
