About this Event
Photography has long been more than image-making—it is a meeting place. A site where presence is immortalized, memory is shaped, and people assert how they wish to be seen and remembered. This workshop invites participants into a shared inquiry and embodied conversation about portraiture, presence, and the power of archival creation through photography.
Led by drawing from traditions of studio portraiture and contemporary practices of self-documentation, the session explores the subtle exchange between photographer and sitter: the pause before the shutter, the awareness of the body, the decision of how to arrive in the frame. Participants will reflect on photography as an act of remembering ourselves forward—creating images and archives that hold complexity, agency, and self-knowledge rather than extraction or spectacle. Hosted at the African American Research Library & Cultural Center, this workshop offers space for conversation, creative exploration, and collective reflection—welcoming artists and community members alike into a practice of looking with care and being seen on one’s own terms.
Workshop materials and refreshments will be provided, and those attending are encouraged to bring personal archival materials, fabrics, memorabilia and materials that inspire their sense of personal celebration.
