About this Event
In this event, we will be hearing from Mita Vaghela, who will provide her personal view on the struggles that a creative artist can face, especially one coming from a minority ethnic background:
"I am a practising visual artist and Director of OVADA - an artist led centre in Oxford.
My practice centres on questioning my social heritage and value through the lens of being a British Indian woman. I have been unpacking my experience of growing up as a daughter of double diaspora in an attempt to discover a sense of belonging and examine the construction of my identity.
My work is research led, encompassing a range of media including sculpture, film, food, photography, performance and drawing. I have a tendency towards favouring everyday objects and experiences as they are relatable as signifiers, and think that the ordinary should not be undervalued or overseen.
As OVADA’s director I am working to welcome non traditional arts audiences whilst engaging with our existing community. This ties in with my own interests in demonstrating how art relates to our everyday lives, our understanding of the world and our wellbeing."
This will then be followed by Oxford Creatives announcing the winners of the Oxford Brookes students competition:'Storytelling - Empowering Your Future Self: Building a More Equitable and Inclusive Future (A Work in Progress).
Any Oxford Brookes students wanting to submit will need to fill out the submission form and either email their piece to [email protected] or bring it along in person to the Brookes Creative Meet Up event, 4th November at 5pm in the Oxford Brookes Enterprise Centre.
For the full brief including judging criteria, helpful tips and more detail on what they want to see, you can check out the post on the Brookes Creative website.
