Synopsis:
Once a gritty launchpad for icons like Nirvana and R.E.M., Charlotte’s Milestone Club—“the CBGB of the South”—now faces an uncertain future as gentrification creeps closer and repairs pile up. Owner Buck Boswell is fighting to keep the music alive, but will it be enough? How to Save a Milestone dives into the DIY community’s battle to save this historic venue, capturing powerful stories from Milestone alumni, including Violent Femmes' bassist Brian Ritchie, who reflects on the widespread closures of independent venues, “It’s a sad thing for live music…a sad thing for people playing music together.”
Can the Milestone defy the odds and survive once again?
Andy the Doorbum:
Andy the Doorbum is a boundary-pushing musician, visual artist, and performer whose haunting and immersive live shows blur the lines between music, theater, and raw emotion. A central figure in the Milestone Club’s legacy, he has spent decades shaping the venue’s atmosphere—covering its walls with his original art, working the door night after night, and even recording music in the club’s tiny door booth.
In How to Save a Milestone, Andy’s deep connection to the legendary venue shines through, offering an intimate look at the DIY spirit that has fueled its survival. His music and visual artistry have left an indelible mark on the underground scene, and his live performances are a must-experience spectacle—somber, surreal, and sometimes unsettling in the best way possible.
