Go is an ancient Asian strategy game. It occupies a role in Asian culture similar to the role chess plays in Western culture. Chess, however, starts with all the pieces on the board and moves from complexity to simplicity. Go, by contrast, starts with an empty board and adds pieces as the game progresses.
