Join Dr Peter Wright to learn about Scottish marine protected areas.As part of Scotland’s international commitment to protecting marine biodiversity 37% of our seas are covered by marine protected areas (MPAs). However, some MPAs have no restrictions on harmful activities, while others benefitted from fishery bans before they were designated. This has led to confusion about the current level of protection and what more is needed to restore viable populations of the species that the MPAs were designated for.
Dr Peter Wright MBE has led research into MPAs and represented the UK at international fora. In this talk he explores the human pressures that caused the decline in marine biodiversity and identifies what is needed to conserve and restore many of the species and habitats that were the basis of MPA designation. While highlighting what actions are needed, he considers what the public can do to promote effective measures to conserve and restore marine biodiversity.
This talk will take place at Inverurie Town Hall, Market Place, Inverurie, AB51 3SN. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The venue has disabled access. There is parking nearby and it is accessible by public transport.
