Marianne Cherrie joins us at 6pm on Tuesday 14 October at the Huonville Hub to talk about her PhD research, which focuses on energy, ethics, and ways of living more simply. Her work looks at asceticism—a long-standing tradition of choosing to live with “enough” rather than always seeking more. Instead of excess, ascetic practices focus on sufficiency:
having what you need without waste. This can be an ethical choice that supports personal wellbeing, stronger communities, and a healthier planet. Like movements for degrowth and climate action, however, this approach faces real challenges in today’s consumer-driven, growth-oriented society. Marianne’s talk will open a conversation about whether a modern form of “energy-ethical simplicity” is possible, and what it might look like for us today. All welcome, light refreshments.
