“How Lucky Can One Man Get,” directed by music video veteran Jim Shea, is a finely crafted documentary featuring previously unreleased footage of beloved singer-songwriter John Prine performing a benefit show at his hometown high school in 2010. In equally compelling offstage segments, Prine shares reminiscences about his upbringing in Maywood, Illinois and reflects on his roots as they were shaped by his close-knit family and the music they shared. Much more than a standard concert film, “How Lucky” reveals the heart and generosity of one of our era’s greatest musical talents — admired by Bob Dylan, among fans worldwide — as he gives back to his community at the height of his powers through music and activism.
Following the screening, Bob Dylan Center Director Steven Jenkins will moderate a discussion and audience Q&A with producers Fiona Whelan Prine and John Anderson. Local favorites John Fullbright and Jesse Aycock will round out the program with a brief acoustic set of Prine classics.
“Prine's stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs…. All that stuff about ‘Sam Stone’ the soldier junky daddy and ‘Donald and Lydia,’ where people make love from ten miles away. Nobody but Prine could write like that.”
— Bob Dylan, interview with Bill Flanagan, Huffington Post, May 16, 2009
