Welcome to Nottingham Queer Arts Collective.
Our mission is to bring together LGBTQIA+ artists of all disciplines from in and around Nottingham to appreciate, liberate, and support our community and art. We do this by facilitating an on-going sharing of our resources, time and creativity, whether new or established in our practise, and celebrating the wonderful lives we live and art we create.
This month we are thrilled to welcome Laurie Owen to speak to The Nottingham Queer Arts Collective.
Laurie Owen is a trans male theatre-maker and educator based in Nottingham. Laurie obtained a BA in Theatre and Performance from The University of Leeds, where he also directed Leeds University Improv Group for three years. Currently, Laurie co-teaches Trans Voice, at Nottingham Playhouse, a monthly free workshop about the basics of transgender voice training. In September, Laurie will be co-teaching ‘Get It Up’, a short course about theatre-making from scratch in austerity conditions.
Laurie will talk about running arts workshops in your local community. He believe arts workshops should never be a box-ticking exercise tacked onto the end of a grant, and that they really do have the power to change lives. Laurie has spent 7 years designing and delivering workshops on a variety of creative topics, including theatre-making, computer programming, creative writing, and transgender voice training. He want to dig into how artists can repair the damage done to people’s creativity by mainstream education, and how we can pass on vital tools for creative expression to our communities. Laurie also talk in practical terms about how to teach workshops, how to write lesson plans that work for you, and how to get paid to run workshops. The talk will be followed by a Q&A.

Support the collective by pre-booking your free ticket at the Nottingham Playhouse website, all welcome.
