AMOS THE KID

The release of Enough as it Was in 2023 followed the remarkable rise of Winnipeg’s Amos Nadlersmith from reclusive songwriter to hometown hero. Only a few years have passed since the not-quite-country musician was playing the odd diamond-in-the-rough set in a half-empty bar; now, he’s a stop-him-in-the-street performer playing for sold out crowds of hundreds and who released one of the “most anticipated" and "most underrated" Canadian albums of 2023”(Exclaim!).

The record saw Nadlersmith fully flesh out the corners of his sonic world; his indie-tinged-country rock is burnished for the first time by grungier undertones, somehow managing to be both incisive and feel-good—matching the energy of his live show. The music is never quite as straightforward as you'd expect, and their racaous sing-along-filled shows have become a shorthand for a great night out in Manitoba.

Enough as it Was was produced, engineered and mixed by Adam Fuhr (Yes We Mystic, Virgo Rising, Tinge), mastered by Cam Loeppky (The Weakerthans, Constantines).

VIRGO RISING

In 2021, after the release of their acclaimed debut EP Sixteenth Sapphire, Winnipeg’s Virgo Rising made a new rule; if the band was truly going to be a reflection of its members, and was going to give themselves fully to the pursuit of creating great work, each bandmate had to have veto power on every decision surrounding their second EP. The decision kicked off a long and sometimes arduous journey.

That their sophomore EP, Vampyre Year, arrived last fall on House of Wonders Records is both a testament to their bond and the capstone of a daring period in the young band’s life. Amidst a swirling cloud of emotion, Emily Sinclair (Vocals, Guitar), Lauren Wittmann (Bass, Keyboards) Jenna Wittmann (Guitar, Violin) and Isaac Tate (Drums, Percussion) emerged with a bold and worthy followup that outshone and outpaced their celebrated indie rock debut.

Vampyre Year was produced, engineered and mixed by Adam Fuhr (Yes We Mystic, Amos the Kid, Tinge) and mastered by Donavan Ostapowich (Tinge, Tired Cossack, Good Bandits).

JULIEN'S DAUGHTER

Julien's Daughter is arguably Winnipeg's finest offering to spring from the depths of Kijiji.ca. After forming in 2019 via a series of classified ads, the group made swift work of crafting an impressive catalogue and a theatrical live show. The band’s danceable alt-rock is helmed by Emma Murphy, the charismatic frontwoman who exudes an energy reminiscent of both David Byrne and Debbie Harry. Their debut EP, The Static That Carries Over, was released in 2021 on House of Wonders Records, and has been followed up with two singles, the latest of which, Rockefeller, arrived this spring.
