It’s time for another pulse-pounding, edge-of-your-seat, high-fun-ated HOUSE OF KNOW!
The First Ghosts - Ancient Mesopotamian Ghost Stories
Irving Finkel has deciphered secret, forgotten ghost stories found on cuneiform tablets from the dawn of human civilization. Languishing silently for thousands of years, these ancient tales shed startling new light on where we came from as a species and our relationship with what's next for us all in the great beyond.
But wait, there’s more…
No Digging: The Story of the BBC’s A Ghost Story for Christmas
A talk by Jon Dear
Ghost stories have been told during the dead of winter since humanity’s earliest days but it’s only since the 70s that television has replaced the fireside for this annual tradition, largely thanks to the work of one man, director Lawrence Gordon Clark.
The BBC’s A Ghost Story for Christmas series began with Stalls of Barchester in 1971 and continues to this day thanks to Mark Gatiss, most commonly adapting the works of M.R. James. But why do these programmes endure? Why did they begin when they did? And what do they tell us about ourselves?
Just who ARE these people?!
Irving Finkel authored a book on our lecture topic entitled, the First Ghosts, as well as a series of other books, including the Ark Before Noah, addressing hs exciting and revolutionary archeological discoveries.
Irving Leonard Finkel is an English philologist and Assyriologist. He is the Assistant Keeper of Ancient Mesopotamian script, languages and cultures in the Department of the Middle East in the British Museum, where he specialises in cuneiform inscriptions on tablets of clay from ancient Mesopotamia.
Jon Dear is the author of a forthcoming book on the series, and is a London based writer on film and British archive television. In this talk he will explore these unique and perennial films which includes such chilling classics as A Warning to the Curious, Lost Hearts and The Signalman.
Audience Note - both Irving Finkel and Jon Dear will be remote guest lecturers.
#houseofknow is every third Sunday of the month from 5-8pm at #flyingfoxtavern
Admission is free, tips are welcome!
