I'll do my best to keep updating this list as items become more and less needed. Also, if you are driving up to Atomic on Tuesday and would be willing to transport donated items, please let me know so we can coordinate!!
You can also donate to the Rhythm Relief fund (hosted by PSDF) to help dancers who have lost their homes. I'll post a link to that in the discussion here.
IF YOU WOULD STILL LIKE TO GET SOME MOCK COMP RUNS IN: MOCK COMP night in preparation for CALIFORNIA BALBOA CLASSIC! Specific comps will depend on attendance, but possibilities include: strictly (bal-swing and/or pure bal, depending on attendance); mix & match. If you're preparing for a particular contest/level and would like to run it during practice, please indicate this in the comments!!
General schedule:
8:30-8:45: hellos and warm up (stretch! drill! mentally prepare!)
8:45-10:15: mock comps

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? Everyone!! You're competing at CalBal? GREAT! You're competing at future events? COOL! You're not super interested in competing, but you love a thrill? YEAH!! The thought of competing gives you the heebie jeebies, but you're down for a challenge?? ME TOO!!! You love to cheer on and support your friends who are doing fun/scary things?? AWESOME!!!!!
Even if you don't want to do the mock comp, come to cheer!!! The more hootin' and hollerin' the better :)
WHY MOCK COMPS? Mock competitions are a great way to work through anything you've prepared for an upcoming contest, or just to work through the nerves of competing in a very low stakes environment. Participating in a mock comp will also help you to work on skills that translate to your social dancing, especially things like phrasing, musicality, and flow! Also, it's a great opportunity to think about and identify your dance values--what are they and how might they impact how you approach a competition? How do they impact your social dancing?
If you're competing at CalBal (or Hot Rhythm Holiday in February!), there are lots of opportunities to get competition practice and targeted feedback (event pages shared as discussion post):
SATURDAY, January 11th: Shuffle Kick Shindig @ Atomic Ballroom - run your outs and get some guidance! *UPDATE* Shuffle Kick will still be running as open practice space, but they will not be hosting a formal mock competition any longer due to the fires.
SUNDAY, January 12th: Bal Lab @ Infinity - get some targeted feedback from Kelly Young, Jason Hammons, and Sarah Stembridge
MONDAY, January 13th: Hot Socks @ Infinity - get your reps in and bring your donations!
ABOUT HOT SOCKS: The Hot Socks Club is a weekly semi-guided open practice group on Monday nights. Come work on your balboa, shag, lindy, and solo jazz! Although we don't offer a formal lesson, dancers of all levels who are interested in working on their dancing are welcome to join!! We work on lots of partnered AND solo movement stuff across all of the aforementioned styles. No partner required!
Floor fee is $10.* No formal lesson, just collaborative learning and open semi-guided practice!
*If you are experiencing financial hardship and this floor fee precludes you from attending, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Sarah Stembridge! We can find a solution that works for everyone!
