HOT MULLIGAN is a ride-or-die testament to staying true to yourself. When the emo band formed in 2014, playing house shows and naming songs by typing blindly into autocorrect, no one expected they’d be selling out thousand-cap venues a decade later. Yet with their fourth LP The Sound a Body Makes When It’s Still (Wax Bodega), that’s exactly where they stand: one of their scene’s most respected bands, proudly calling themselves the #1 Hot New Band (11 years running).
Since 2018’s Pilot put them on the map, Hot Mulligan—Tades Sanville (vocals), Chris Freeman and Ryan Malicsi (guitars), Jonah Kramer (bass), and Brandon Blakeley (drums)—have been streamed over 140 million times, praised in Paste and Alternative Press, and toured with The Wonder Years and Jimmy Eat World. Their new LP is a white-knuckled affirmation of everything they stand for, exploring paranoia, fear, and the terrifying fact of existence itself. Across blistering choruses and vulnerable moments, Sanville moves from screaming in basements (“Moving to Bed Bug Island”) to tender farewells (“My Dad Told Me to Write a Nice One for Nana So This Is It”).
Still, this is a Hot Mulligan record, which means it rocks. Lead single “And a Big Load” is a heroic pop-punk sprint, while “Carbon Monoxide Hotel” pairs raw-nerve lyrics with one of their catchiest choruses. Even in dark times, the band never loses its humor—whether recording in spots that smelled of chocolate Axe or trying to pry their drummer away from World of Warcraft.
With longtime producer Brett Romnes, Hot Mulligan has crafted their most cohesive album yet, full of subtle guitar twinkles, synth sparkle, and interludes that stitch the record into a true start-to-finish statement. 2025 finds them taking that energy to Bonnaroo, Slam Dunk, a UK arena tour with Pierce the Veil, and their own headlining run. From house shows to festival stages, Hot Mulligan has never strayed from their roots—and they’re proof that staying true pays off.
