Jason Winikoff is a US-born, Vancouver-based drummer, percussionist, and ethnomusicologist. He has performed and studied drumming traditions extensively in Zambia, New Orleans, Ghana, and Haiti. After years of living, learning, and gigging in New Orleans, he brings the sounds of the Crescent City to Guilt & Co. with an explosive quintet.The Jason Winikoff Hot 5 specializes in Black American dance music from the 10's, 20's, 30's, and 40's with a focus on early New Orleans jazz. The group pulls influence from the likes of King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Baby Dodds, the ODJB, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, and modern custodians of the tradition such as Shannon Powell, Preservation Hall, and Herlin Riley. Expect trad deep cuts, long-form bangers, bouncy grooves, barn burners, bluesy ballads, and raspy vocals.
