DMITRI MATHENY

“Dmitri Matheny is a jazz treasure. The lyrical Matheny has impressive chops, but it’s his warmth and soulfulness that win you over.”—All Music Guide

Acclaimed for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique, American flugelhornist DMITRI MATHENY, 2016 Earshot Instrumentalist of the Year, has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” (International Review of Music). An honors graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Dmitri Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following, touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, traveling to 19 countries. With over 100 recordings to his credit, Dmitri Matheny has released 12 albums as a leader. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.”

Dmitri Matheny presents over 100 concerts annually on tour. He has traveled to 21 countries: Argentina, Azerbaijan, Barbados, Belgium, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Thailand, United Kingdom and throughout the USA.

Notable domestic appearances include Big Sur Jazz Festival (Big Sur CA), Blues Alley (Washington DC), Boston Center for the Arts (Boston MA), Cliff Bell’s (Detroit MI), Community Arts Center (Philadelphia PA), Dazzle Jazz (Denver CO), Earshot Jazz (Seattle WA), Festival of New American Music (Sacramento CA), Jazz Aspen Snowmass (Aspen CO), Jazz Bakery (Los Angeles CA), Jazz Gallery (New York NY), Jazz Showcase (Chicago IL), Monterey Jazz Festival (Monterey CA), NightTown (Cleveland OH), Oregon Coast Music Festival (Coos Bay OR), Outpost Performance Space (Albuquerque NM), Portland Jazz Festival (Portland OR), Redlands Bowl (Redlands CA), Rochester International Jazz Festival (Rochester NY), San Francisco Jazz Festival (San Francisco CA), San Jose Jazz Festival (San Jose CA), Snug Harbor (New Orleans LA), Stern Grove Festival (San Francisco CA), Taos Jazz Festival (Taos NM), Telluride Jazz Celebration (Telluride CO), Tucson Jazz Festival (Tucson AZ), Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall (New York NY) and Yoshi’s (Oakland CA).

He's currently on tour in promotion of his latest, critically acclaimed recording, CASCADIA.

“Flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny and his quintet play perfectly on CASCADIA. The theme—aside from Matheny's home in the Northwest—seems to be pure beauty. His flugelhorn sound is warm and round, with a glow like pure gold, no alloys allowed. 4-Stars! ”—Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz

“What does Dmitri Matheny do? He takes the dangerous path: he embraces the softness of his instrument, but puts it to work delivering sharp, serious music. And almost as if daring us to underestimate him, he even performs an arrangement of Glen Campbell’s 1970s pop-country classic ’Wichita Lineman’ — and makes it emotionally powerful.” —Rick Anderson, CD HotList

“Matheny uses his gorgeous tone and remarkable lyricism to paint exquisite portraits in sound … a master of his chosen horn.” —Jack Bowers, All About Jazz

“West Coast Jazz filled with fresh ideas and beautiful playing. The music is quietly creative, subtle, and always swings.” —Scott Yanow, LA Jazz Scene

“All of the tracks on CASCADIA are really quite magical…supremely wonderful music to enjoy.” —Allen Scott, All That's Jazz

FREDDY "FUEGO" GONZALEZ grew up in New York listening to hip-hop and making beats. He first joined the horn section of a New York hip-hop band.

"I was around a lot of great music, great grooves, DJs making samples, and I thought 'that's cool, I could do that!' So, I picked up a computer and started making beats to practice over," explained Fuego. Although his family is full of musicians, including an uncle who played with Cuban singing star Celia Cruz, Fuego didn't think a career in music was for him. "My dad was always listening to Coltrane, and as a kid I would ask him to stop. Now, I'm playing 'A Love Supreme' at my shows!"

Fuego said his family encouraged him to apply to Berklee College of Music when he was in high school, but he told them he didn't want to be a professional musician. He began pre-law studies at Fordham University. "But I was spending all of my time going to jam sessions, recordings, playing and writing music," Fuego said.

Playing in a late-night jam in 2006 at the iconic Blue Note club convinced him that the world of music held some promise, so the next year he turned to jazz studies at Berklee. The real jazz education, Fuego said, came from bouncing around jam sessions in New York City. He also earned a degree at The New School with mentors including bassist Reggie Workman and saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom, who trained him in composition.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music (M.M. Film Scoring '15), he has shared the stage and/or recorded with artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Wu-Tang Clan, Ruben Blades, Juan Luis Guerra, Eddie Palmieri, B.B. King, and Melissa Aldana, among others. Was a featured soloist on the DVD "Sirope Vivo" which won a Latin-Grammy in 2016 and aired on HBO Latino. (Interview Excerpts, KNKX)

RANDY HALBERSTADT has been a major figure on the Pacific Northwest jazz scene for many years. A multi-dimensional pianist, he is equally at home playing be-bop, Latin, down-home blues, mainstream, free and eclectic jazz. He has performed with Herb Ellis, Terry Gibbs, Buddy de Franco, Matt Wilson, Pete Christlieb, Bobby Shew, Joe LaBarbera, and many others. In 1990, Randy performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival with drummer Mel Brown. Randy has performed with the Seattle Symphony and is the pianist for the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra.

On the strength of his large repertoire, great sense of swing, and acute listening skills, Randy has established himself as a first-call accompanist for jazz vocalists. He has performed with Sheila Jordan, Kevin Mahogany, Dee Daniels, Greta Matassa, Marlena Shaw, Meredith d’Ambrosio, Ernestine Anderson, Nancy Kelly, and Jackie Ryan. In 1997 Randy performed with the innovative Jay Clayton at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. He is featured on Jay’s 1997 recording Circle Dancing (Sunnyside) and Nancy Kelly’s 2009 recording Well Alright! In 2004 Randy joined Meredith d’Ambrosio for a concert tour of Israel.
