On Friday May 3 at 7:30pm, Poetics Corvallis presents a poetry open mic featuring poetry of the late backpacker poet Alex Leavens, whose poems infused with his unique perspective on nature, art and craftsmanship were published in many literary journals. After his tragic death by his own hand in 2021, members of Portland Ars Poetica edited and brought out “Horsethief Meadows” with the help of his family, the first and only book collection of Alex's poetry, including some work previously unpublished. Bruce Parker, one of the book's editors, will attend and read poems from the book.

We will start with Alex's poetry at 7:30pm, with Open Mic to follow. Open Mic signup starts at 7:15pm. Come share poems or poetic prose that you like, by you or by another, on any topic, at our friendly free open mic in the artsy ambience of the InterZone Cafe. Or come to just listen, and let poetry dissolve, at least for a moment, the walls between us all.

More about Alex Leavens:
Born in 1975, Alex Leavens was a fourth-generation descendant of Oregon Trail pioneers. In college he lived for a while in a wickiup he designed and built himself. He founded the Old Federal Ax Company and the Oregon School of Survival and Tracking, and worked as a backcountry ranger in Olympic National Park, a primitive survival instructor in Utah, a firefighter in several western states, and a naturalist for the Portland Audubon Society. As a key member of Portland Ars Poetica, a poetry critique collective, Alex's clear sense of imagery and style helped shape the poetry of several past Poetics Corvallis featured poets. His poetry has appeared in journals such as Cirque: A Journal for the North Pacific Rim; Windfall: A Journal of Poetry of Place; Perceptions Magazine; Cathexis NW; Clover: A Literary Rag; Tiny Seed Literary Journal; Frogpond; and Modern Haiku.
