Scott F. Hall (b. 1963, Lompoc, California, USA) handcrafts unique, minimalist musical instruments--as a solo luthier, he primarily creates strings and horns. His compact and functional instruments are individually made with an eye to less technological saturation and a more sustainable future. To that end, Hall works with renewable domestic wood—in fact, his small abstract sculptures are constructed from offcuts which accumulate due to his work in luthiery. Each original is conceived with simplicity in mind. Hall’s penchant for precise, austere form and function roots in his upbringing in the 1960s and ‘70s, the heyday of minimalism.
Several hundred of Hall’s pieces are owned by musicians and collectors in the US and abroad. Seven of his instruments were included in FEEDback, a 2021 group show presented in the Italian Pavilion of The Venice Architecture Biennale. In 2022, one of Hall’s horns was presented and demonstrated at The Spanish Tuba and Euphonium Congress, Conservatorio Superior De Musica, Malaga, Spain.
Hall taught undergraduate and graduate level art and design courses as adjunct, assistant, associate, and full professor in Sunnyvale, California, in Alfred, New York, and in the School of Visual Arts and Design at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Recently at UCF, Hall was awarded the title Professor Emeritus. Prior to his decades professing, Hall was employed as a professional musician, assistant preparator for three art museums, co-fabricator of scenic sculptures for Orlando, Los Angeles, and Paris theme parks, and freelance 3-D computer graphic animator.
Hall studied at the University of Hawaii, the University of Florida (AA in liberal arts and sciences, BFA in sculpture, magna cum laude), and at Washington University in St. Louis (MFA in sculpture).
This event opens Thursday June 13th from 5:30pm-7:30pm and runs from Friday June 14, 2024 through August 2, 2024 weekdays from 8:30am-4:30pm. Free and open to the public.
