The Stage4Beverley Horizon Stage showcases the very best emerging talent on the folk and roots music scene. It has become one of our most popular events, featuring young, emerging musicians and singers from around the country. It takes place in the informal setting of the theatre’s Café Bar, giving a relaxed feel to the event. Entry is free, with donations being taken on the door.
Artists this year will include Sam Baxter and Merle Harbron and The Hop.
ABOUT SAM BAXTER AND MERLE HARBRON
Sam Baxter and Merle Harbron are an Anglo/Scottish duo creating dynamic, full-bodied arrangements of contemporary and traditional music. Using fiddle, drones and voice, the pair build vibrant musical landscapes, weaving together melodic lines inspired and improvised from traditional songs and dance music. These two highly-skilled musicians create intimate performances that in an instance can pivot from reflective and nuanced to driving and energetic. Together, they are a force of nature; captivating audiences with their infectious interplay and magnetic musical spirit.
ABOUT THE HOP
The Hop is an exciting new trio who recently graduated from the folk degree at Newcastle University. After meeting in the National Youth Folk Ensemble, they developed an impulsive approach to collaborative composition which has led to a plethora of original tunes. Their instrumental versatility allows the band to explore a wide soundscape that maintains their traditional roots with an innovative flair. Not only do they play multiple instruments, including guitar, flute, recorder and fiddle, but their infectious presence onstage is increased by the use of electric guitar and synthesizers that make for a compelling and complex performance. Combined with their compositional abilities, The Hop bring a new perspective to the folk tradition, with music that can appeal to all ages.
