One of last year's mesmerising performers returns in full band mode. Two sets of sublime songwriting and performance from the mighty Jo Meares Band, don't miss this evening.
JO MEARES
Jo is a Sydney-based singer/songwriter who has produced multiple albums over 25 years of playing.
He currently has 2 bands, his Sydney 8 piece and his Melbourne-based Silver Bullets band.
Jo has released an album with both bands in the last 3 years.
His first solo album was awarded Australian Album of the Year in 2009 on the 2SER Outpost show.
'I was hipped to this Australian singer/songwriter in the very best way: A mate kindly gave me one of his LPs and just told me to listen. I did. And I still am! Jo Meares has a dark whisper of a voice. He islike an introverted, quiet Paul Kelly. The writing is profound, the production and delivery exquisite. He might be the Aussie Bill Callahan in fact'
Simon Sweetman, Off The Tracks/Radio NZ
‘Dream Hotel’ is a magnificent tour de force: an assemblage of pure emotion that breathes softly down your neck and takes possession of your very soul. Enchanting, transfixing, mesmerising: weaving an indelible spell. This is pure magic. Stately, enigmatic and full of a wispy atmosphere – hushed vocals, sparse instrumentation and deeply romantic lyrics – this is an album where the spaces in between the notes says more than most contemporary music around at the moment manage in a
lifetime. Every note is imbued with a melancholy edge, wracked with pain and solitude, regret and loss and yet immeasurably beautiful’.
Arun Kendall, Backseat Mafia on Jo Meares 2022 album ‘The Dream Hotel’
...this an album that does something for you and something to you. In a live setting at one point Iwould probably shed a tear. Magnificent just doesn't seem to cover it and if I would give a higher mark I would. Outstanding...10/10
Ernest Platt, Wildspiritz Rising on Jo Meares 2018 album ‘Back to the World’
Back To The World is another of Meares’ mini-masterpieces. The 10-minute closer, An Old Dog And A Shotgun, would be worth your time alone, would be the album standout, the reason to come here to hear this – but there’s not a single dud track. Once again he’s taken time to create something ‘whole’, a piece, an album that could, in another setting, stand up as film or book, a graphic novel, a macabre ballet’.
Simon Sweetman, Off The Tracks on Jo Meares 2018 album ‘Back to the World’
...the whole album hit me in a way that some albums do;something by Richmond Fontaine, say. Or Springsteens Ghost of Tom Joad.
A complete thing, a completed album that plays out like a movie or
a book or a stage-play. It’s there. It unfolds for you. You’re listening to it but you can see it in front of you – you can imagine, the mind wanders due to the beauty and intensity and integrity of the music and the lyrics. Big bold stories. Real.
Simon Sweetman, Off The Tracks/Radio NZ
This is a magnificent album. Steeped in an antipodean dusty dryness yet leavened by bright rays of sunshine and Meares eloquent poetry that strike like shards of lightning. Jo Meares Silver Bullets take us on an extraordinary journey into the heart of darkness: a swampy gothic paradise laced with white frills and blood red velvet. His voice is an unguent, a salve that at the same time hypnotises and mesmerises, drags you into a beautiful stunning abyss.
