This series will guide you in crafting your own land acknowledgement, teach you the basics of Halq'eméylem, and provide a supportive space to practice and refine your new skills.Session 1 - Create Your Own Land Acknowledgement
In this session, you will learn how to craft a meaningful and respectful land acknowledgement.
Key topics include:
-The importance of land acknowledgements and when they are appropriate
-Who should offer a land acknowledgement and the best ways to do so
-The key elements of a strong land acknowledgement, including addressing the broader territory and specific nations
-How to make your land acknowledgement genuine, focusing on gratitude and your role in reconciliation
-An introduction to the basics of the Halq'eméylem language, with a focus on phrases for self-introduction (to be expanded upon in session 2)
Session 2 - Learning Halq'eméylem Language Basics
This session will introduce you to the foundational elements of the Halq'eméylem language, empowering you with key vocabulary and phrases.
Key topics include:
-How to introduce yourself in Halq'eméylem
-Pronouncing the names of local nations and territories
-Common trail names and simple greetings: hello, goodbye, thank you, and you’re welcome
-Additional tips for learning the language and next steps for continued practice
Session 3 - Recap & Practice Session
In this final session, we will review and practice what you’ve learned in Sessions 1 and 2.
This is an opportunity to:
-Recap the key points of crafting a land acknowledgement
-Practice Halq'eméylem phrases and greetings
-Ask questions, refine pronunciation, and gain confidence in using the language
-Engage in group discussions and share experiences
-Receive personalized feedback and tips for continued growth
