In recognition of Veterans' Day, EAA Chapter 706 is hosting a screening of Honor in the Air, a moving documentary of Vietnam helicopter pilot and Wisconsin native Scott Alwin. This event is free and open to the public as a service of Chapter 706.The screening will be held in the large community hangar at the Wisconsin Rapids airport.
Captain Alwin was born and raised in rural Wisconsin and served five tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot predominantly flying gunships. He earned a record 136 Air Medals, Vietnam Republic Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Silver Star, and Distinguished Flying Cross, all with oak leaf clusters, but even more important, he earned the respect and admiration of his fellow soldiers and family. He is buried in Marathon County.
Award winning documentary producer/director/writer Susan Reetz, of Weston, Wisconsin-based Clear Focus Media, LLC, worked closely with Captain Alwin’s family, members of the 68th Assault Helicopter Company with whom he served, and other friends to tell his story. Filming for the project began in summer of 2020.
The film contains never- before-seen footage filmed during the Vietnam War by Alwin’s Crew Chief, Frans VandenBroek, as well as other archival footage and photos, and interviews with Alwin’s
remaining siblings, his widow and children, a close friend, director of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, and several members of the 68 th Assault Helicopter Company. What emerges is a moving portrait of a humble man dedicated to his family and his country and doing his best to make the world a better place. This is more
than a story of war; it is a story of love.
A question and answer session with Reetz and members of Scott Alwin’s family will immediately follow the showing of the film. The nosecone of Captain Alwin’s last helicopter will also be on display for the showing. Admission is free.
