Our non-profit activities as NAC-J are mainly to convey the history of Japanese people in Hawaii to Japanese people and to support and interact with Kansha Preschool, which is run by the Nisei Veterans Center in Maui.
The film you will see this time, "Okagesama de - The Path of Japanese Women in Hawaii", is a documentary that compiles valuable testimonies, mainly from Nisei, about the history and hard work of Japanese women in Hawaii, which has hardly been conveyed until now.

The trigger was the production of the previous film "Go for Broke! Memories of Hawaii Japanese Nisei", which compiled the testimonies of many Nisei veterans, but the production was not the end. I continued to interact with Nisei veterans after that. And naturally, I got to know Nisei grandmothers as well.
And when I heard about their lives in the past, I learned that Nisei grandmothers also had the same hardships as their Issei parents. However, about 100 years ago, Japanese society in Hawaii was a feudal society, just like in Japan. Women took a back seat to men and did not come forward. As a result, there were not many records left. That's why I felt the need to make "Okagesama de."
Several of the second-generation Japanese who gave us such valuable testimonies have already passed away. As those of you living in Hawaii know, the second-generation Japanese were all very lovable characters. That's why I want many people to know about the history and hard work of Japanese women.
History is written as "History," but I wanted to emphasize the history of women, so I wrote "Herstory" in this film.
This time, we have been given the rare opportunity to have Japanese people living in Hawaii watch the film.
I hope that everyone will watch it, learn about the strength of women once again, and learn about our activities.
The screening is free, but we would appreciate a donation. And this film is bilingual in Japanese and English, so anyone can watch it.
I look forward to meeting you all.
