✦ ???? ??????? ???????? ?????? ✦When Korean director Hong Sangsoo started out, he was often compared to French director Éric Rohmer. Both directors are interested in scenes from daily life, people who talk, everyday details.
The depth of their films lies in their apparent simplicity and the insistence on the fact that daily life and human relationships are cinema-worthy material. In both cases, rewatching their films often reveals hidden or deeper layers.
But as his oeuvre grew, with Hong releasing up to three features in some years, Hong became a recognisable ‘auteur’ in his own right.
Perhaps most fascinating is Hong’s obsession with repetitions and variations – almost as if to force the audience to rewatch the story even as they are watching the film for the first time. This means that the hidden layers become more apparent even on first viewing. This technique is beautifully illustrated in films such as In Another Country, which has three similar segments, and Right Now, Wrong Then, which proposes the same story twice but with different details. The different parts together suggest the thought processes and inner workings of the characters in a way that a simple telling never could. The devil is in the details.
