HOMETOWN // OAKVILLE

Opening Reception: August 26 | 2–5 PM

✨ Free to attend

You’re invited to HOMETOWN, a heartfelt exhibition that captures the spirit of Oakville through the eyes of two extraordinary artists: Peter Cheung and Naoko Matsubara. Both residents of Oakville, these artists offer distinct visions rooted in experience, culture, and place.

Peter Cheung is a Southern Ontario–based painter, originally from Hong Kong, where early exposure to Chinese art shaped his artistic foundation. His practice reflects a lifelong fascination with nature, sailing, and the shifting landscapes of Canada. After years in the corporate world, he embraced painting full-time in 2015. His work blends west coast wildlife with the vivid seasonality of Ontario and the East Coast, bringing a meditative presence to each canvas. With accolades from juried shows and a passion for plein air painting, Peter’s work offers a serene yet emotionally resonant look at the natural world. His work has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions and is held in private collections across Canada and internationally. He has also exhibited at institutions such as the Art Gallery of Burlington and the Art Gallery of Guelph.

Naoko Matsubara, a renowned Japanese-Canadian woodcut printmaker, has exhibited internationally for over six decades. A graduate of Kyoto Academy of Fine Art and Carnegie Mellon University, her career spans prestigious institutions, residencies, and global collections — from the British Museum to the Smithsonian. Her prints carry deep ties to Shinto philosophy, nature, and cultural identity, merging traditional Japanese techniques with a contemporary sensibility. Matsubara continues to shape the dialogue around printmaking and fine art worldwide. Her work is currently featured in a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

We excited to serve dim sum, Tsingtao beer, and iced jasmine green tea!
