This is a free event for homeschoolers, 4th grade and above. If you want to experience a theatre organ in all its glory, I urge you to attend. If you can’t make it, don’t worry, free concerts are held multiple times a year.
The only thing I ask, is that if you mark “going” please be committed to come.
The Wurlitzer Hope-Jones Unit Theatre Organ, or the Wurlitzer Opus 42, was build in 1914 for the Seattle Liberty Theatre, a modern movie palace at the time. Being a silent movie staple, the organ’s usage remained strong until the introduction of “talkies” in 1929 where it was then destined for demolition. Thankfully, it was saved in 1955 and stored.
In 1973 it was purchased for $5,000 and moved to Spokane First Church of the Nazarene’s newly constructed sanctuary where it was meticulously restored and currently resides.
A chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society was created to preserve the organ as Spokane’s only accessible community theatre organ.
Organists come from all over the world to play and entertain on this organ. With the hands of a talented musician, does the power and beauty of it really shine.
Dave Wickerham is a talented organist who’s started his musical education at 7 and has an impressive career. A passion of his is teaching children the love of music. He’ll be playing songs that’ll surely keep them entertained.
