HOMECOMINGS with The 5 & Dime

Greater Jacksonville has long been an important part of the artistic journeys of many successful creative artists across fields. In this series, some of these very artists, now working nationally as theatre professionals, come home to join and lead our local artistic community in topical conversations, workshop sessions, professional development, and classes inspired by their work in the field.

SESSION #1: Personal Narrative & Solo Performance with Zeina Salame

Join us for our very first Homecomings with The 5 & Dime workshop! This in-person is led by Zeina Salame, co-founder of The 5 & Dime. Over the course of this 4 hour session, a panel of local artists will converse on their experiences performing solo work, workshop participants will get a chance to try out a bit of solo performance by getting some light performance coaching on sides from published solo plays, and then participants will be guided through the very early stages of crafting their own, original, solo pieces through their participation in a variety of story sharing, improvisation, and writing exercises.

This workshop is open to artists of all experience levels, ages 16 and up.

WHEN: Saturday, June 26th from 11:00am to 4:00pm

WHERE: The Florida Ballet (10131 Atlantic Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32225)

CLASS FEE: $35*

4 hour intensive will include:

  • Opening remarks and group agreements.
  • Zeina leads a round-table/panel discussion on performing solo work with Bradley Akers, Josh Waller, & Milton Threadcraft III.
  • Group readings, discussion of, and light performance coaching in a selection of brief sample monologues from published solo-plays (sides will be provided).
  • Zeina guides participants through a series of story sharing, conversation, and writing exercises/prompts with an emphasis on personal narrative. We will then work together to craft and share early drafts of autobiographically inspired monologues. Participants leave with these pieces in progress to develop with The 5 & Dime at a future time.
  • Snacks and water will be provided, in addition to breaks throughout. An hour lunch break is built into the time.

Zeina Salame (she/her) is a director, actor, educator, applied theatre practitioner, and a scholar. Zeina has just been awarded a postdoctoral fellowship in theatre at the University of Vermont where she will be directing, teaching, publishing on her research, and supporting UVM's College of Arts and Sciences in its campus race and gender equity initiatives. She holds a PhD in Theatre Arts from the University of Oregon. Her dissertation, "Carried In One Woman—Reflections on Arab American Female Solo Performance'' centers on themes of "home" and the creative value of embodied generational knowledge, heritage, and intersectionality in performance aesthetics. A few recent creative collaborations include work with Artists Repertory Theatre's Mercury Company, the Guthrie Theater's Level Nine with New Arab American Theater Works, and the National Institute for Directing and Ensemble Creation with Pangea World Theater and Art2Action. Some of her recent writing on theatre has been published on Howlround Theatre Commons, Etudes, Al Jadid, and in the Encyclopedia of Women & Islamic Cultures. Zeina is also a co-founder and artistic team member of The 5 & Dime.
