The Sportsman has teamed up with Mallinsons to bring you a brand new homebrewers competition which will be judged by a team of brewers and beer experts.
For your chance to brew the winning beer at Mallinsons in Huddersfield, homebrewers are challenged to brew a dark ale in the 4.0% to 5.5% ABV range. This can be any style of dark ale, the only rules are the beer must use hops & ingredients that are commercially available and viable to produce a beer that can be sold to trade.
You have until Saturday 26th July 2025 to register for entry into the competition with the beer entries needing to arrive at The Sportsman by Friday 1st August 2025. Each entrant must provide three bottles or cans (any size) to enter.
The beer style:
The beer must have a target strength of 4.0% - 5.5% ABV. For the competition recipe you can choose any dark style using any hops or adjuncts that match the beer.
Entrants must supply 3 x bottles or cans (any size) for judging, you will also be asked to supply information on what style you have chosen, whether the beer is bottle conditioned, what the estimated or target abv is etc.
Malt: Any commercially available
Hops: Any commercially available
Adjuncts: Any commercially available
Yeast: Any commercially available
ABV: 4.0% – 5.5% abv
Style: Any Dark, however the beer will have to work as a cask conditioned beer.
Other: There is no option for ageing / barrel ageing. Maturation will have to be along the lines of standard beer (max 4 weeks).
Judging:
Your beer will be judged by the professional brewers from Mallinsons and experienced beer judges from Beerhouses to the standard awards judging system, which gives a score out of 100 – taking into account: Aroma, Flavour, Presentation (colour, head retention, carbonation), and Overall Quality.
Judging will take place at The Sportsman on Saturday 2nd August 2025 with the announcement of the winner(s) taking place at 7pm.
Entering:
Please enter using the registration form, providing your details and agreeing to the terms & conditions of the competition.
The prize:
The winner will have the opportunity to work with the brewers at Mallinsons to develop and brew the winning beer at a brew day shortly after the competition on a date to be confirmed. Once brewed this beer will pour at all Beerhouses cask venues (The Sportsman, The County, West Riding, Stalybridge Buffet Bar & The Cricketers) as well as being sold into the pub trade by Mallinsons to pour at other venues. You will also get 8 pints of your beer free of charge in your selected Beerhouses pub.
You’ll need to record and provide a copy of your recipe. The beer will be brewed into cask.
Homebrew Heroes 2025 Terms and Conditions:
1. The Homebrew Heroes 2025 is open to all homebrewers and only one entry is permitted per person.
2. Entrants must complete a registration form to enter. The form must be completed and emailed to [email protected] or received at The Sportsman by 26th July 2025 (midnight). Any entry that is late, incomplete or inappropriate will be deemed invalid.
3. The Sportsman takes no responsibility for any issues or technical failures that may result in any entry not being received or not properly registered. No responsibility will be taken for damaged or lost entries.
4. This is restricted to 20 entries to be judged at The Sportsman on August 2nd 2025.
5. The competition will be judged by a panel of judges compiled by professional brewers & beer experts using the beer standard style guide. Each entrant will receive via email judges’ feedback. The judges’ decision will be final.
6. All entries must be received at The Sportsman by 1st August 2025. Any received after this date will not be eligible for entry into the competition.
7. The names of winners will be published on The Sportsman website and social media.
8. Any personal data submitted to Beerhouses will be processed in accordance with any applicable data protection legislation and Beerhouses Privacy Notice which is available at Privacy Notice - Beerhouses
9. The overall winner will have the opportunity for their recipe to be brewed at Mallinsons brewery, subject to approval of the head brewer. Submitting an entry means that the entrant agrees to provide a copy of the recipe used to brew the beer in an eligible format and that Mallinsons and the trade customers of Mallinsons are licenced to use, change, brew and sell the beer made from the recipe.
10. All ingredients must be commercially available to purchase and the beer made must be commercially viable to sell to trade and at retail.
11. Beerhouses reserves the right to replace the prize with alternative prizes of equal or higher value if necessary and to cancel, amend or suspend the competition, or any part of it (including these Terms and Conditions) as required by circumstances.
12. The winner will be announced at The Sportsman after judging on 2nd August 2025 and will be notified in person, by email, by telephone or in writing (using the details provided at entry) and will be invited to arrange a brew day with Mallinsons brewery. Beerhouses will not be liable for any failure or inability to contact a winner nor the brewers’ availability to attend a brew day on the dates provided.
13. Mallinsons cannot accept responsibility for or liability arising from entrants taking part in the competition. Beerhouses & Mallinsons give no warranty or guarantee in relation to the prize and accept no responsibility or liability for the prizes being amended. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Beerhouses & Mallinsons exclude liability for all loss, damage or claim arising as a result of a participant’s entry into the Competition or use of the prizes
14. Beerhouses & Mallinsons reserve the right to overrule the naming of the beer if deemed inappropriate
15. By entering the competition, entrants agree to hold Beerhouses & Mallinsons harmless for liability, damages or claims for injury or loss to any person or property, relating to, directly or indirectly, participation in this competition, or claims based on publicity rights, third party intellectual property rights, defamation or invasion of privacy
16. Beerhouses reserves the right to refuse entry or to refuse to award a prize to anyone in breach of the Rules
17. These terms and conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with English law. Disputes arising in connection with this competition shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts
