Albany folks, come explore different meanings of "home" and "hometown" by making handmade "artists' books."
About this Event

The Home/Town Handmade "Book" workshop will be a chance to explore your own sense of what "home" means to you. This fun art workshop is designed especially for people who live, work, or go to school in Albany or feel a strong connection to the place. This is the first event in Albany's year-long, city-sponsored art and conversation project, "Path to Belonging." Path to Belonging aims to fight othering and exclusion and build a sense of belonging for everyone.

What does home mean to you? What is your hometown? What kind of hometown is Albany if you're growing up here now? We'll gather to explore homes and hometowns past, present and future, nearby and far away.

In this two-part workshop, together we'll make "artists' books" in order to delve into what makes us feel at home--or out of place. "Artists' books" are intriguing, tactile objects that are a bit like a cross between a book and a sculpture. They might have no words at all or be full of words. You don't need to be an artist, or a writer, to make them! More than anything, they are great conversation starters, and easy and fun to create.

Artists Lauri Twitchell and Peter Suchecki of REDSTARTstudio will share their own artists' books and teach us how to make our own. They'll provide basic supplies and prompts and teach three book structures. You'll start making books in the workshop and generate ideas and discuss materials you can forage at home. Then you'll complete the books on your own at home after the workshop. Finally, we'll reconvene two weeks later to show and tell about our finished books.

Our discussions as we make and share these "books" will be as illuminating as the objects themselves. You might find it fun to come with a couple of friends or neighbors!

Please sign up only if you can attend both full sessions. Each person must register separately.

"Path to Belonging" is sponsored by the City of Albany as a Creative Justice Art Project and is a series of participatory art and conversation workshops, performances and exhibitions running from fall 2024 through fall 2025. For more information visit the project website.
