This holiday season, we at the Roanoke Valley SPCA are asking the community to help make sure that no shelter pet is left behind. Through our annual Home for the Holidays foster program, individuals and families are encouraged to open their homes and hearts to pets in need. This year, however, the shelter is facing an unprecedented challenge, making participation more critical than ever.Between December 20th and likely through the middle of February, we will temporarily close as we undergo major renovations to replace our shelter’s aging roof and HVAC system. During this time, there will be no heat in the facility and frequent losses of power, meaning we must find temporary homes for every single dog and cat in our care.
The Home for the Holidays program has always been about giving pets the joy of being with a family for the holidays, but this year, it’s about so much more. With the shelter closed, we absolutely cannot house animals in the building during construction with all of the noise, lack of heat, and frequent losses of power. We’re relying on our community now more than ever to provide safe, warm, and loving homes for our pets during this time. No one likes to be alone during the holidays—especially not the dogs and cats in our care. Whether you’ve fostered before or are new to the experience, we invite you to join us in making this holiday season unforgettable for these deserving animals.
Fostering a pet is a rewarding experience that brings joy to both the animal and their temporary family. And the best part? The Roanoke Valley SPCA provides everything needed to care for a foster pet, including food, a leash and collar, a litter box, toys, treats, and more. All the foster needs to provide is love and a cozy space in their home.
So how can you help?
If you’re interested in fostering:
• AND you are already an approved foster, please reach out to our Intake and Foster Coordinator, Kay at [email protected]
• AND you are NOT a current approved foster, you can fill out an application here https://rvspca.org/foster/become-a-foster/
• If you can’t foster, you can still help spread the word!
• DONATE! https://rvspca.org/donate-now/ This roof and HVAC replacement is costing quite a pretty penny. We are still looking for help covering the cost and would be so appreciative if you would donate!
What happens if I’m approved as a foster?
Once you’re approved as a foster, our Intake and Foster Coordinator, will get in touch with you to discuss the pets who still need fostering and walk you through the process. All pets will need to be out of our building by December 21st. You’ll go home with a furry new friend for the holidays!
