Visit Woodhorn and meet other families at our Home Educators day! To celebrate World Space Week we have included a space themed workshops and space themed crafts in our mini museum. We are also offering a quieter Working Down the Pit session as requested at our previous Home Educator Day.
Workshop prices are £4 per child per workshop and accompanying adults are free. Spaces are limited and children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Workshops are one hour long and will be led by members of our Learning Team.
Our bookable workshops on Thursday 10th October are:
Colliery Tour: A guided tour around our historic colliery buildings. Discover how the mining shafts were sunk, why we have two shafts and why ventilation was so important in the mines. Suitable for all ages.
Robots and Mining: What do robots have to do with Mining and Mars? Find out in this hands-on workshop created to celebrate World Space Week. Programme our Earl floor robots using simple coding to navigate around our Mars maps and create your own challenges for others to try out too!
Working Down the Pit (Quieter session): Get dressed for a day of hard work down the pit. Experience the darkness and cramped conditions as you crawl through a tunnel. Discover the tools that miners used to work and stay safe underground. Suitable for ages 5 – 11. Please note our coal town exhibition has dark and narrow areas. This session will have reduced capacity and we will turn the sounds off in coal town for guests who prefer a quieter experience.
Stomp Rockets: Celebrate World Space Week in this rocket themed session. Learn how rockets are launched into space and the forces that act on them before creating your own paper rocket and testing it on our launch pads. After making a basic rocket, see if you can you improve your design and make it fly even further! Suitable for ages 7+
