Can a DIY air filter reduce air pollution in home-based daycares? A community meeting discussing the results of the indoor air intervention!
About this Event

Indoor Air quality Intervention

The second most common place for children, after their homes, is daycare centers, where they spend time while their parents work. With the need to reduce indoor air pollution becoming more pertinent, the Rhode Island Department of Health issued an information notice in 2021 on preventing the spread of COVID-19 in buildings. The CDC also recommended increased ventilation and air filter use. Indoor air pollution affects vulnerable groups, including children and workers, and reducing air pollutants through ventilation has become increasingly important. We investigated whether a low-cost DIY air filter could reduce particle and aerosol concentrations in indoor air and improve the breathing air environment for children and workers in four home-based daycare in Providence, RI.

Over the course of 3, one-week sessions (Monday - Friday), we measured air quality at home-based daycare centers. For the first week and second, we measured air quality without a Corsi cube air filter and for the third week, we measured air quality with the air filter installed. We were able to assess how and to what extent the Corsi cube filters the air.
