🍻 From Home Brew to Beer of the Show 🍻This is what happens when you get involved!
The New Zealand Amateur Winemakers and Brewers Federation brings together home brewers from across the country for its biennial national conference and competition — and it’s where passion projects turn into award-winning beers.
At the October 2025 competition, Beer of the Show went to a bold Hazy Double IPA brewed by Jim Batten of the Hawkes Bay Amateur Winemakers and Brewers Club. One beer. One brewer. One national title.
🏆 The Prize (sponsored by The Beer Spot):
The winning beer is professionally brewed Shout out to Saint Leonards Brewing Co! and poured on tap at The Beer Spot venues, giving a home brewer the chance to see their beer enjoyed by the public — exactly as it should be.
Jim’s beer was first brewed on the shortest day of the year and originally named “Shortest Daisy Double Hazy.” With its midsummer release, it evolved into “Longest Daisy Double Hazy” — and now it’s ready to be shared.
This Sunday, join us at The Beer Spot Morningside to celebrate the launch, meet the brewer, and taste what’s possible when you get involved in your local home-brewing club.
Jim’s journey started with kit beers back in the 1980s before joining his local club to learn all-grain brewing, competitions, and judging.
“The feedback you get from entering competitions is invaluable,” Jim says. “It’s the fastest way to improve — and you don’t need to be an expert to start.”
